Gabriel Martinelli delivered a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Brazil came from behind to edge Japan and secure their place in the World Cup Round of 16.
With the match seemingly headed for a draw, Brazil struck in the 95th minute after winning possession on the edge of Japan’s penalty area. Bruno Guimarães quickly released Martinelli, who showed composure under pressure to slot the ball in off the post and seal victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
It was a cruel ending for Japan, who had matched Brazil stride for stride throughout the contest. The Asian side looked composed in the opening half and took the lead when Kaishu Sano capitalised on a loose pass from Danilo, driving forward before firing a low shot past the goalkeeper.
Brazil struggled to break through before the break but returned with renewed intensity in the second half. Their persistence paid off when Casemiro rose highest to power home Gabriel’s back-post cross and level the score just 10 minutes after the restart.
Momentum shifted Brazil’s way, and they came close to taking the lead minutes later through a moment of brilliance from Vinicius Jr. The forward weaved past defenders and unleashed a shot destined for the far corner, only to be denied by Japan keeper Zion Suzuki, who tipped the ball onto the post.
Japan held firm despite mounting pressure, but a costly mistake proved decisive in the dying moments. Ao Tanaka lost possession near his own box, allowing Brazil to punish instantly and snatch victory at the death.
The win sees Brazil advance to the knockout stage, where they will face either Norway or Ivory Coast, while Japan is left to reflect on a valiant but heartbreaking performance.
