Norway produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026, defeating Brazil 2-1 in their Round of 16 clash in New Jersey to secure a historic place in the quarter-finals.
After a tightly contested first half ended goalless, Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 80th minute, powering home a header to give Norway the advantage.
The striker sealed the victory 10 minutes later with a spectacular long-range strike, leaving Brazil with a mountain to climb.
Neymar pulled one back from the penalty spot in stoppage time, but it was too late to prevent Brazil’s elimination.
Brazil had opportunities to change the outcome earlier in the match. Bruno Guimarães failed to convert a penalty in the 14th minute, while substitute Endrick squandered a clear chance after being set up by Vinícius Júnior. Norway also had an early goal ruled out for offside in the third minute.
The victory sends Norway into the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the nation’s history. For Brazil, it marks their earliest World Cup exit since 1990 and extends their winless record against Norway in international football.
