James Lowe’s chances of representing Ireland at the 2027 Rugby World Cup remain uncertain after head coach Andy Farrell admitted the former Leinster winger is unlikely to feature for the national team while playing in Japan.

The 34-year-old departed Leinster at the end of the season after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on a new contract. Lowe is now expected to continue his career overseas, with Japanese club Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath reportedly interested in securing his services.

Despite the likely move away from Irish rugby, Farrell has not completely closed the door on a potential World Cup return. However, he suggested Ireland’s selection policy for overseas-based players could make Lowe’s path back into the squad difficult.

The Irish Rugby Football Union has traditionally selected players from the country’s four provinces, with exceptions being rare. Farrell said the next 12 months could provide clarity on how the policy develops.

“I think it’s the right thing to do, to have a look and give people a bit of space to be able to do that. We’ll see how that goes,” Farrell said.

Lowe has been a major figure during Farrell’s time in charge, helping Ireland secure two Six Nations titles and the 2023 Grand Slam. The New Zealand-born winger made his Ireland debut in 2020 after qualifying through residency and has since become a key attacking option.

Farrell said he was disappointed to lose Lowe from the current set-up, describing him as a “larger-than-life character” who will be missed by the team.

“He’s a brilliant player… I know that James is delighted with the contract that he got in the end and he’s on to a new venture,” Farrell said.

With injuries affecting Ireland’s wing stocks, including Tommy O’Brien, Shayne Bolton and Mack Hansen, versatile back Jamie Osborne has been given an opportunity to fill the number 11 jersey during the opening Nations Championship match against Australia.

Ireland will continue their preparations for the 2027 World Cup during their July fixtures against Australia, Japan and New Zealand, while Lowe’s future international prospects remain a talking point.
