More than 500 residents in Yawe District, Kadavu, are now benefiting from improved access to clean and reliable water following the completion of two new borehole water systems funded by the Government.
The projects include the Yawe District School Borehole, which supplies water to Naqalotu and Yakita villages, and the Nalotu Village Borehole, providing a dependable water source for households in the area.
Speaking at the commissioning, Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo said the investment would deliver long-term benefits for communities, particularly for students who can now focus on their education without the challenges associated with water shortages.
For years, villages in the district depended largely on rainfall and often experienced water scarcity during extended dry spells. The new borehole systems are expected to improve public health, raise living standards and strengthen resilience to changing climate conditions.
The Government invested a total of $410,000 in the two projects. Of that amount, $230,000 was allocated to the Yawe District School Borehole, which serves six classrooms, four staff quarters and 83 households across Naqalotu and Yakita. A further $180,000 funded the Nalotu Village Borehole, directly supporting 39 households.
Minister Vosarogo credited the successful completion of the projects to the efforts of the Mineral Resources Department’s technical teams and the cooperation of the communities of Yawe, Naqalotu, Yakita and Nalotu.
He said the true impact of the investment would be measured not by the infrastructure itself, but by the positive changes it brings to the lives of those who depend on it.
