Children at Dilkusha Children’s Home in Waila are now enjoying improved facilities following the completion of renovation works carried out by engineers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), the Australian Defence Force (ADF), and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).
The upgraded facilities were officially handed over on 11 June under the Australia-funded Coral Sapper Initiative.
The project included repairs to bedrooms, bathroom upgrades, repainting of shared spaces, installation of safer electrical systems, and the construction of a new playground.
Australian Defence Attaché to Fiji Colonel Henry Stimson said the initiative was focused on improving the children’s daily living conditions while strengthening cooperation between partner defence forces.
He thanked all personnel involved for their contribution to the project.
Commander of the RFMF Engineers Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Jiuta Tabakisuva Baleisolomone, said the collaboration provided valuable opportunities for troops to develop skills alongside their counterparts while supporting essential services at the home.
Engineering team leader Corporal Matthew Moynihan said the project involved extensive work and highlighted the strong teamwork demonstrated by personnel from the RFMF, ADF, and NZDF throughout the renovation.
Speaking on behalf of the home, Reverend Dr. Mosese Salusalu of the Methodist Church in Fiji expressed appreciation for the improvements, thanking the engineers for enhancing the facilities and contributing to the wellbeing of the children.
The Coral Sapper Initiative continues to demonstrate how regional defence partnerships can support communities while strengthening ties between participating nations.
