As part of the Fiji Navy’s 50th anniversary, a heartfelt tribute was held yesterday to honour the men and women who have proudly served under the white ensign over the past five decades.
The commemorative event placed special emphasis on naval veterans, acknowledging their sacrifices and contributions in building the foundation of Fiji’s maritime defence force.
Among the honoured guests was former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, one of the original 70 personnel who formed the Navy in 1975 under CAPT(N) Stanley Brown. Bainimarama, now President of the Fiji Naval Association- received an honour guard welcome for his longstanding service and legacy.
Also in attendance was Commander David Lane (Ret.), the second Chief of Navy, adding depth to a ceremony rich in tradition and remembrance.
The tribute began with a memorial wreath-laying ceremony, honouring fallen sailors and officers. A touching moment followed with the unveiling of archival Navy photographs, preserving stories and faces of the past for future generations.
Commodore Timoci Natuva, Chief of Navy, presented a Tabua in gratitude to the veterans, acknowledging their service while humbly seeking forgiveness for any present-day shortcomings. He called on their continued support and guidance as the Navy charts its future course.
The occasion concluded with a shared lunch where veterans and active-duty personnel exchanged stories, reinforcing the unbreakable bond forged by shared duty, sacrifice, and pride.
“To all who have served and continue to serve – vinaka vakalevu for your unwavering dedication to Fiji,” said CDRE Natuva.
As the Navy marks half a century, this moment served as both a reflection of honour and a renewed commitment to serve the nation with pride and purpose.
