Renowned archaeologist and academic Dr Tarisi Vunidilo, commonly known as Dr T, is calling on families and communities to play a stronger role in preserving cultural identity, warning that the loss of language can lead to the loss of ones self.

Speaking to Fiji One News, Dr Vunidilo said language is central to how young people understand who they are and where they come from.

“If you lose your language, you lose your identity, you kind of lose yourself in the whole spectrum of life,” she said.

“It is really important for our young people to hold on to their language and their dialects.”

While acknowledging that Western influences and modern lifestyles are unavoidable, Dr Vunidilo stressed that strong foundations at home can help children navigate these changes.

“If there is love and care provided from home, it gives children the space to be aware of who they are,” she said.

Dr Vunidilo also highlighted the crucial role parents and extended family members play in shaping values and identity, saying teaching must go beyond words.

“The role of parents goes both ways, not only in teaching, but also in showing. Action speaks louder than voice,” she said.

She added that cultural knowledge and values should be shared and practiced collectively, with uncles, aunties, and community members all taking responsibility for raising children.

“When children grow up surrounded by love and care from everyone around them, they will never go wrong,” Dr Vunidilo said.

Addressing the influence of technology, Dr Vunidilo said it should not be viewed solely as a threat, but rather as a tool that can benefit families if used responsibly.

“Technology has its own place. If you use it in the right way and manage your time wisely, it can bring blessings to you and your family,” she said.
