Traditional leaders, government representatives and delegates from across Lau gathered today for the opening of the two-day Bose ni Yasana o Lau at the Great Council of Chiefs Grounds in Nasese to discuss the province’s future development.
President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu officially opened the meeting, highlighting education as the cornerstone of sustainable development and a key tool in addressing national issues, including the growing threat of illicit drugs.
He said strengthening families and empowering young people are essential to building safer, stronger and more resilient communities.
The President also acknowledged the leadership of the Turaga na Tui Nayau, Sau ni Vanua o Lau, na Tui Lau, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, commending the province’s long-term vision centred on unity, collaboration and strategic planning.
Lau’s investments in tourism, shipping services and the establishment of a provincial office in Suva were recognised as examples of development driven by strong leadership and sound planning.
The contribution of young people returning home with knowledge and skills gained through higher education was also highlighted as an important factor in the province’s continued growth.
The meeting also emphasised the responsible management of natural resources, including discussions on extending the customary fishing rights (iQoliqoli) framework in line with Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
Communities were encouraged to embrace entrepreneurship and support small business development to create employment opportunities, strengthen household incomes and drive economic growth across the province.
