Fiji has advanced its efforts to protect and restore mangrove ecosystems, highlighting their importance in coastal protection, fisheries support, and climate resilience.

The Ministry of Forestry, working alongside WWF and GIZ, recently hosted the first Mangrove Restoration Working Group meeting in Suva.

The gathering brought together government bodies, local communities, and development partners to better coordinate national restoration efforts.

Key outcomes from the meeting include defining a national baseline range for mangrove coverage, creating a priority restoration map under the “30 Million Trees by 2030” programme, and strengthening monitoring and reporting systems.

These steps aim to ensure restoration work is targeted, measurable, and aligned with national goals.

During the opening session, Conservator of Forests Sanjana Lal stressed the need for joint action to address mangrove degradation and enhance resilience.

Discussions also focused on building a transparent, science-based framework to guide restoration, ensuring appropriate species selection and suitable planting locations.

The initiative reflects the government’s broader commitment to environmental protection and climate response.

The Ministry acknowledged ongoing support from WWF, funded by the Bezos Earth Fund, and GIZ through the German Government, as well as contributions from all participating stakeholders.

Officials say the strengthened approach will help protect coastal communities, preserve biodiversity, and secure vital natural resources for future generations.
