“Government recognises the pivotal role that the media plays in Fiji in ensuring the circulation and responsible reporting of information as was witnessed during the events of the COVID-19 pandemic and most recently the 2022 National General Elections.”

This was the reassurance made by the Attorney-General Siromi Turaga while delivering his remarks at the Dialogue Fiji’s Report Launch and Panel Discussion of the Fiji Media Industry Development Act 2010 held at the Convention centre in Lami.

The A-G stated that the Fiji Government reaffirms its support of a free, independent and responsible media and as earlier expressed by Government, the Media Industry Development Act 2010 (‘MIDA’) will be reviewed with the assistance of a committee that will be established to review the Act.

“There is currently no set timeframe for when the review is to be completed, however, it is a priority for Government. We encourage robust journalism and urge journalists to practice fair and balanced reporting and most importantly, allow for the right of reply at all times.”

Furthermore, the A-G highlighted the Report provides an insightful commentary on MIDA, drawn from relevant scholars and experts and will be a helpful resource when reviewing MIDA.

“I commend Dialogue Fiji and all those that contributed to the compilation of this Report which entails the evolution of the media industry under MIDA and for convening this important event.”

The panel discussions included editors from the newsrooms, academia’s and representatives from Dialogue Fiji this was followed by a Question and Answer session for those present at the event.
