The Ministry of Fisheries has launched three pivotal documents that will shape the future of Fiji’s fisheries sector.
The Ministry of Fisheries Strategic Development Plan 2024-2028, the Fiji National Fisheries Policy 2024-2028, and the Operational Plan for 2024-2025 represent a shared vision of sustainability, growth, and resilience in the fisheries sector.
Minister for Fisheries Alitia Bainivalu said Fiji’s fisheries sector is a cornerstone of our economy, contributing significantly to GDP and supporting the livelihoods of thousands of Fijians.
She added the documents are a roadmap to achieving ecological balance, economic growth, and climate resilience in the fisheries sector.
“The Operational Plan 2024-2025 outlines the immediate actions we will take to implement our long-term strategies. This includes specific, measurable targets aligned with our National Development Plan, the Strategic Development Plan, and the Fiji National Fisheries Policy. Through this plan, we will focus on enhancing resource management, expanding aquaculture, and ensuring the resilience of our fisheries sector against external challenges.”
The Fiji National Fisheries Policy 2024-2028 is a comprehensive framework that aligns with the National Development Plan and international commitments, particularly SDG 14, focusing on conserving and sustainably using marine resources
Conservation International Fiji commended the government on launching the three key documents, calling it a milestone achievement.
The policy ensures that Fiji’s fisheries sector is not only economically productive but also environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive.
