Land Transport Authority Acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa issued a warning to all drivers today about using mobile phones while driving.
He said the use of mobile communication while driving has become a widespread issue that poses
significant risks to road safety in Fiji.
Mr Rokosawa said the issue came to light during joint enforcement operations with the Fiji Police Force this festive season.
He said the LTA was very concerned about complaints from the general public about public service vehicle (PSV) licence holders engaging in this irresponsible driving behaviour.
“PSV licence holders, including bus and taxi drivers, play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of passengers and other road users,”Mr Rokosawa said.
“The use of mobile devices while driving not only endangers the lives of those within the vehicle
but also jeopardises the well-being of pedestrians and fellow motorists,” he said.
“Our joint enforcement operations have so far captured a number of traffic offences including improper use of mobile communication, speeding, careless driving, driving a motor vehicle without a driver licence, and driving a motor vehicle with an expired driver licence not just among PSV drivers but other driver licence holders.
“These are traffic violations that can be avoided simply by adhering to road safety rules and regulations. “Our goal is to create a safer road environment for everyone. Distracted driving is a preventable hazard that demands the collective effort of the community.”
Mr Rokosawa also commended members of the public for taking a proactive stand to report reckless driving behaviour on our roads.
“The Authority is encouraging the public to be vigilant and to document instances of distracted driving. “Important details such as video evidence or photos showing the breach, vehicle registration number, and details of the incident should be carefully noted.
“This information will be vital in holding accountable those who engage in unsafe behaviour on the road.
“The Authority cannot be everywhere and we urge individuals to be proactive in capturing evidence and reporting incidents to the LTA complaints center. By working together, we can contribute to the reduction of accidents and fatalities on our roads.”
To ensure safety on our roads during the cyclone/festive season, members of the public are urged to
assist the LTA by reporting dangerous driving or poor driving behaviour via our LTA complaints
platforms – Text to 582, email [email protected] / [email protected] or calling the Call Centre on 3392166. Complaints can also be filed via the LTA live chat service website at
