On the eve of the 65th anniversary of Ratu Sukuna Memorial School (RSMS), a delegation of alumni, teachers, students, and parents paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Republic of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, at State House.
The visit was made to traditionally acknowledge the President’s acceptance of an invitation to officiate at the school’s Blue Sapphire Anniversary celebrations, which will be held this Saturday at Ratu Sukuna Park in central Suva.
President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, himself a former student of the Nabua-based institution, warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed gratitude for the honour of being invited to be part of this significant milestone.
Established in 1958 by resolution of the Great Council of Chiefs (Bose Levu Vakaturaga), RSMS was founded to honour the legacy of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna; a revered national statesman, former Speaker of the Legislative Council, Secretary (Minister) for Native Affairs, and the late Turaga na Tui Lau.
Reflecting on his time at the school, President Lalabalavu said the experience helped shape the trajectory of his life and leadership journey.
“To be the President of the Republic today and to look back on those formative experiences is something I hold dear in my heart,” he said. “The lessons I learned at RSMS have stayed with me throughout my journey.”
The President also offered words of encouragement to current students, underscoring the enduring value of education.
“To be successful in life, there are three things we must always remember; our faith, obedience to our parents, and the pursuit of greatness through education,” he stated.
Speaking on behalf of the RSMS Alumni National Executive Committee, President Mr. Etonia Radrodro Serukeibau described the 65th Anniversary as a moment to honour the school’s legacy of producing leaders, scholars, and responsible citizens.
“For 65 years, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Memorial School has continued to nurture generations of individuals who uphold the values and discipline instilled by the late Turaga na Talai, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna,” Mr. Serukeibau said.
The RSMS Blue Sapphire celebration this weekend is expected to draw hundreds of former students and supporters from across the country and abroad, highlighting the enduring impact of one of Fiji’s most respected educational institutions.
