In response to a call for assistance from the United Kingdom, the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) has dispatched a cutting-edge P-8A Poseidon aircraft to aid in the monitoring of the Pitcairn Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as part of the UK’s Blue Belt marine conservation program.

Covering a vast area approximately 5500 kilometers east of New Zealand, the Pitcairn Island EEZ spans 834,000 square kilometers and stands as a designated marine reserve where commercial fishing and mining activities are strictly prohibited. In an effort to safeguard this pristine ecosystem, the RNZAF’s P-8A crew undertook 10 hours of airborne surveillance in January, detecting a total of 24 vessels traversing the waters.

Integral to the UK’s Blue Belt initiative, which aims to address global issues such as overfishing, species extinction, and climate change, the Pitcairn Islands EEZ represents a critical area for conservation efforts. The utilization of remote surveillance sensors, coupled with the recent aerial reconnaissance by the RNZAF, bolsters monitoring capabilities and ensures the accuracy of reported activities within the marine reserve.

Air Component Commander Air Commodore Andy Scott emphasized the significance of the RNZAF’s contribution to preserving the Pitcairn Islands EEZ, highlighting the aircraft’s role in verifying remote surveillance data and serving as a deterrent against illegal activities within the marine reserve. Notably, the P-8A’s extensive range enables broader coverage of remote regions, as demonstrated by its recent patrol in support of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.

The collaborative effort involved various stakeholders, including the UK Marine Management Office, the Government of the Pitcairn Islands, the Joint Maritime Security Centre UK, the National Maritime Coordination Centre of New Zealand, the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the New Zealand Defence Force. This joint tasking underscores the commitment of both New Zealand and the UK to uphold marine conservation principles and protect vital ecosystems.

Last year, the RNZAF augmented its capabilities with the acquisition of four P-8A Poseidon aircraft, which are routinely deployed to conduct maritime surveillance missions across the Southern Ocean and the southwest Pacific region. These deployments reflect New Zealand’s dedication to environmental stewardship and the preservation of marine biodiversity.
