Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru has commended a group of young people with disabilities who completed a Mobile Skills Training programme at the Western Disability Centre in Lautoka, stressing the importance of motivation, mentorship, and equal opportunities for all youth.

Speaking at the closing ceremony on June 11, Minister Saukuru said young people, regardless of their abilities, require support and encouragement to reach their full potential.

He noted that creating opportunities for skills development remains essential to ensuring no young person is left behind and that pathways are available to build confidence, independence, and self-reliance.

Seventeen participants successfully completed the two-day training programme, which included practical sessions in screen printing, vase making, and tie-and-dye.

Minister Saukuru told graduates that disability should not determine their future, but rather their talents, perseverance, and character.

He highlighted the importance of skills training in opening doors to self-employment, income-generating activities, and personal development, while reaffirming the Coalition Government’s commitment to supporting young people with disabilities.

The Minister also acknowledged the National Council for Persons with Disabilities for its partnership in delivering the programme, saying the collaboration had provided valuable learning opportunities that would help participants gain practical skills and greater confidence.

National Council for Persons with Disabilities Western Manager Eka Loco said the training offered participants an opportunity to overcome some of the challenges they face by learning new skills that can contribute to their personal growth and future employment prospects.

She added that the programme could help participants pursue income-generating opportunities, improve their standard of living, and enhance their social inclusion.

During the event, Minister Saukuru also presented sports equipment to the Western disability team as preparations continue for the upcoming Special Olympic Talent Identification Games in Suva on June 13.

He encouraged the graduates to continue developing the skills they had learned and use them to create opportunities for themselves, assist their families, and inspire others in their communities.
