Women and girls affected by gender-based violence in Fiji’s Western Division will have greater access to protection and support services through a new partnership between the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection and Empower Pacific.

The collaboration will see Empower Pacific operate a 24-hour Gender-Based Violence Safe Shelter, providing emergency accommodation and a range of support services for survivors seeking safety and assistance.

Services available through the shelter include crisis intervention, psychosocial support, counselling, referrals and other essential care designed to meet the needs of women, girls and individuals experiencing violence.

Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Social Protection Selina Kuruleca said the initiative reflects the Ministry’s ongoing efforts, under the leadership of Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Hon. Sashi Kiran, to strengthen protection systems and improve access to quality services for survivors.

Minister Kiran stressed that preventing and responding to gender-based violence requires a coordinated approach involving government agencies, civil society organisations, faith-based groups, development partners, communities and other stakeholders.

She noted that strong partnerships play a key role in enhancing both prevention and response efforts while helping to ensure women and girls can live free from violence.

The Ministry also acknowledged Soroptimist International for donating the building now used as the shelter facility and recognised the contribution of LDS Charities in supporting the initiative.

Minister Kiran commended Empower Pacific for its continued commitment to providing professional and survivor-centred services.

“Empower Pacific has been a valued partner in supporting survivors of violence and promoting the wellbeing of women and families. We look forward to continuing this important partnership to ensure survivors receive the care, protection and support they deserve,” she said.

The initiative supports the goals of the Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls 2023–2028 and reinforces efforts to safeguard the rights, safety and wellbeing of women, children, older persons, people living with disabilities and families across the country.
