The University of Fiji’s Centre for iTaukei Studies held their Arts & Craft Exhibition today
with the theme “Revitalisng iTaukei Culture through Art”.

Lecturer at the Centre for iTaukei Studies, Mosese Baseisei says we are at an age where
iTaukei families in urban centers are engaging less in traditional art and craft creations even
if we see lots of displays here and there.

Baseisei says the truth is that it is a challenge to maintain such traditional knowledge and to ensure that
the knowledge is rekindled and passed down to young people.

He says this is an opportunity to showcase that with a united purpose, revitalization of iTaukei Culture through iTaueki Arts is absolutely possible.

Baseisei says they would like as much as possible for students not only to see that the artifacts are
ornaments but they are deeply rooted with their identity and that every art has a story that
reconnects to the environment and nature.

He also highlighted there are plans to have more exhibitions in future as they had invited the Fiji
Arts Council to participate in the and to establish the rapport between UniFiji and the
Council.
