Government operations at the Nasau Government Station on Koro Island have received a major digital boost with the commissioning of Starlink satellite internet, spearheaded by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management.
Once known as a telecommunication blackspot, Koro now enjoys reliable, high-speed connectivity; a transformative shift for civil servants, students, businesses, and the wider community.
For years, officers at the Koro Government Station depended on other agencies for internet access, which often slowed down service delivery and communication. With Starlink now active, they can operate more efficiently and independently, improving response times and administrative coordination.
Koro is one of 10 remote government stations selected under this digital connectivity initiative, made possible through the UNDP Pacific Gov4Res Programme. The project ensures real-time communication with headquarters and expands digital opportunities for nearby villages.
To complement this technological upgrade, the Reserve Bank of Fiji facilitated a Financial Literacy Training for the community; with a special focus on women and youth. Participants learned about SMART goal setting, budgeting, digital financial services, scam awareness, and investment options, empowering them to make sound financial decisions.
This milestone marks the beginning of a new digital era for Koro Island; one of improved access, efficiency, and empowerment, as digital transformation reaches Fiji’s most remote communities.
