A heavy rain warning remains in force for the entire Fiji Group as an active trough of low pressure continues to affect the country, bringing periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says the weather system, located just west of Fiji, is gradually moving eastwards towards the group. Associated cloud and rain bands have already spread across the country and are expected to continue affecting most areas until later today.

Forecasts indicate occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times, with isolated thunderstorms expected across much of Fiji. Authorities are warning that heavy downpours could trigger flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Meanhwile, the Ministry of Education has also announced the closure of all schools across Fiji today, as heavy rain continues to affect Fiji.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro says the precautionary decision has been made to minimise unnecessary travel and reduce the risk to students, teachers and families as weather conditions remain unpredictable.

The adverse weather is expected to impact communities, businesses and transport networks, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding. Informal settlements, low-lying communities and Irish crossings are among locations at risk, with flash flooding likely to cause traffic disruptions.

Urban centres with poor drainage systems may also experience surface flooding, while motorists are being urged to exercise caution due to wet roads and reduced visibility during periods of intense rainfall.

The weather office says rain is expected to gradually ease from western parts of the country by midday today.

Members of the public are advised to remain alert, monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions as conditions continue to develop.

The next Special Weather Bulletin on Heavy Rain is expected to be issued at around 10:30am today, or earlier if necessary.
