A young Fijian entrepreneur is encouraging more women to pursue opportunities in coastal fisheries and sustainable farming after being recognized nationally for her work in the sector.

Amelia East of BluVolt Enterprise was named Woman Coastal Fisher of the Year at the National Women in Agriculture Awards held at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

East says it was her first time attending the awards and she was honoured to receive recognition for work that focuses on protecting natural resources while building a sustainable business model.

She explained that the initiative developed by BluVolt Enterprise centres on aquaculture integrated farming, combining both marine and land-based practices.

East says the model contributes to the blue and green economy, while ensuring that coastal resources are preserved for future generations.

She adds that similar models could be replicated by communities across other islands in Fiji and the Pacific.

According to East, the venture is a women-led family business, run alongside her sisters, who are working together to build what she described as a “pool club” initiative connected to their aquaculture activities.

She says being surrounded by supportive women and mentors has played a major role in her journey.

East acknowledged the guidance she has received not only from her siblings but also from relatives and industry stakeholders who have supported the project and helped her reach national recognition.

She says the award is a major encouragement for young farmers, particularly women, who are trying to make a difference in environmental conservation and sustainable food production.

East says being recognised as a young woman farmer at a national level provides motivation to continue their work in protecting coastal ecosystems.

She is now urging young women across the country to believe in themselves and pursue what they are passionate about.

East says her own journey was driven by her love for the ocean, diving and fishing, which later became the foundation of her work.

She adds that passion and persistence are key to success.

East also encouraged young women not to be afraid to ask questions and seek knowledge when entering new fields.

She believes that with the right mindset, individuals can transform their lives and create meaningful change in their communities.
