Australia Under-20s have secured top spot in Pool D of the World Rugby U20 Championship after a commanding 53-17 victory over the SportsWorld Fiji U20 side in their second pool match.
The young Wallabies were led by outstanding centre Trevor Pritchard, whose brilliance set the tone for a dominant first-half display. Pritchard created Australia’s opening try in the eighth minute when he beat two defenders and fended off another before producing a superb flick pass for winger Tom Farr-Jones to score.
The influential Reds midfielder then added a try of his own midway through the first half, dummied past a defender and beat two more tacklers on a dazzling solo run to the line.
Pritchard finished with a game-high 12 tackle busts from just six carries during his 59 minutes on the field, helping Australia race to a commanding 36-3 lead at halftime.
For Fiji, discipline proved costly throughout the contest. The match featured a total of six yellow cards, with Fiji struggling to capitalise despite Australia being reduced to 14 men on three separate occasions and even down to 13 players at one stage following yellow cards to Jacob Job, Edwin Langi and Charlie Bird.
The Australians continued to control the game after the break, with Farr-Jones crossing for his second try shortly after Fiji had managed to get on the scoreboard in the second half.
Australia’s forward pack also made a significant impact, with Toby Brial, son of former Wallaby Michael Brial, scoring a double. The lock crossed for both the opening and closing tries of the first half as Australia dominated possession and territory.
Despite moments of promise from the Fiji side, they were unable to claw their way back into the contest. Australia continued to punish errors, with Marshall Le Maitre extending the lead before replacement halfback Angus Grover brought up the half-century late in the match.
The defeat leaves Fiji with plenty to work on ahead of their final pool match, with discipline and defensive lapses proving decisive against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
Australia’s victory sets up a crucial Pool D showdown against France next week, with the winner expected to advance to the championship semifinals. France also maintained its unbeaten record after overcoming an early scare to defeat Spain 57-32.
For the SportsWorld Fiji U20 side, attention now turns to finishing their campaign strongly and taking valuable lessons from a tough encounter against a clinical Australian outfit.
