The Government has allocated $1.6 million in the 2026–2027 National Budget to strengthen efforts against illicit drugs and organised crime.
Speaking in Parliament, Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua said Fiji has recorded more than $4 billion worth of illicit drugs circulating in communities over the past three years, with more than 2,400 drug-related cases reported last year.
The funding will support the continued establishment of the Counter Narcotics Bureau, including the recruitment of specialised officers and the development of the Counter Narcotics Bill, which will provide the Bureau with its legal framework.
Naivalurua also confirmed that Cabinet has endorsed the General Policy Direction on the National Coordination of Transnational Serious and Organised Crime and Illicit Drug Enforcement, with enforcement efforts to be coordinated through the National Joint Enforcement Center (NJEC).
He highlighted the ongoing partnership between the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, saying joint operations contributed to a 30 per cent reduction in illicit drug cases and an 18 per cent drop in overall crime during the first quarter of the 2025–2026 period.
The Minister said while stronger enforcement is essential, long-term progress will also rely on prevention, rehabilitation and coordinated action between Government agencies and communities.
