Faf de Klerk has made it clear that his return to South Africa is not about winding down his career, with the veteran scrumhalf still chasing a spot in the Springboks squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

The 34-year-old has joined the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein, but his ambitions remain firmly focused on competing at the highest level.

De Klerk says his priority is to deliver strong performances for his new club and keep himself in contention for another World Cup campaign.

Asked if he still hopes to feature at his third World Cup, De Klerk confirmed the goal remains alive but acknowledged he must first prove himself at club level.

“I have to perform for the Cheetahs, otherwise I won’t get anywhere,” he said.

The former Lions, Sale Sharks and Yokohama Canon Eagles halfback believes regular performances and match fitness will be key to earning another Springbok call-up.

“I have to make sure I’m ready if the call comes. It helps a lot that I can now train here and stay match fit.”

De Klerk also dismissed the idea that his move to Bloemfontein represents the final stage of his career, insisting he still has plenty to achieve.

“I still want to play, I still want to be competitive, I want to be the best in my position and the best I can be for the team.”

The move to the Cheetahs came after a casual suggestion from his wife Miné, which led De Klerk to explore the opportunity with director of rugby Frans Steyn.

The decision also has a strong personal connection, with De Klerk’s family having close ties to Bloemfontein.

His wife attended Eunice School in the city, while both of his daughters were born there.

Having supported the Cheetahs from a young age, De Klerk says the move felt like a natural fit as he continues his push for elite honours.
