Fiji and New Zealand have strengthened their longstanding bilateral ties after signing the refreshed Duavata Partnership for 2026–2030 in Auckland.

The agreement was signed by Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Sakiasi Ditoka, and New Zealand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Winston Peters.

Minister Ditoka described the renewed partnership as a significant step forward in strengthening one of Fiji’s closest international relationships.

Replacing the 2022–2025 framework, the new five-year agreement is built on the concept of “Duavata,” meaning working together or partnership. It sets out a shared vision to promote a stronger, more secure and resilient Blue Pacific Continent.

The two countries also welcomed the continued growth in bilateral trade, which has reached $1.9 billion, while reaffirming their target of increasing two-way trade to $2 billion by 2030.

The renewed framework also reinforces support for Pacific-led approaches to regional priorities and cooperation on key issues, including climate change, maritime security, transnational crime, disaster preparedness and sustainable economic development.

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to the Pacific Islands Forum’s 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and the Ocean of Peace, with the partnership expected to further strengthen regional unity, peace and sustainable development.
