Isareli Balecegitaki has overcome many difficulties in his academic journey.

One of the most challenging was participating in online classes on his mobile phone because he did not have a laptop.

So when the Nasaqalau Villager from Lakeba walked up to the podium to celebrate attaining his Bachelor of Primary Education degree at the Fiji National University graduation ceremony this week, it was a proud moment for the youngster.

But it was also a bittersweet.

Mr Balecegitaki wished his mother was there to witness his achievement.

Unfortunately, she passed away 2 days before his graduation.

Mr Balecegitaki said facing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic did not stop him from achieving his goal and with the help and support of his friends, he was able to overcome those issues.

“During covid-19 pandemic it was difficult for me to attend online classes on zoom because I used my phone as I did not have access to a computer or laptop,” he said.

“I thank my friends for helping me at that time. Despite the restrictions they offered to give me a hand with my studies.”

Mr Balecegitaki said he hoped his journey and story would help inspire others.

“I encourage you all to work hard and make your parents proud.”

Despite the loss of his greatest supporter, his mother, Mr Balecegitaki said he was determined to honor her memory by excelling in the academic field.
