We cannot afford to overlook the dangers posed by reckless behaviour, especially during major school sporting events such as the upcoming Coca-Cola Games where excitement can sometimes overshadow caution.

Land Transport Authority board chairman Inosi Kuridrani said this at a meeting of stakeholders ahead of the upcoming Coca-Cola Games.

In light of recent concerns regarding unruly behaviour during major school sporting events, the LTA issued a stern warning to drivers, student passengers, and school supporters – that it will not tolerate any behaviour that compromises public safety or violates traffic laws.

The LTA said recent incidents have highlighted the dangers posed by unruly passenger and driver behaviours, such as students dangerously waving school flags outside the parameters of moving buses.

The authority said such actions not only endangered the lives of those involved but also posed a serious risk to other road users and pedestrians.

Recognising the need for immediate action, the LTA convened a meeting with officials from the Education Ministry, Fiji Police Force, Fiji Bus Operators Association and Coca-Cola EuroPacific Partners this week at LTA headquarters in Valelevu to address concerns and ensure the safety of all Fijians.

The meeting focused on strategies to enhance safety measures during the Coca-Cola Games (Fiji Finals) from May 2-4, 2024, in Suva.

“The authority is committed to promoting safe and responsible transportation and views the safety of our citizens as our top priority,” Mr Kuridrani said.

“The LTA and the Fiji Police Force will intensify monitoring efforts to ensure compliance with traffic laws and regulations as part of our proactive approaches to mitigate risks and enforce compliance with road safety rules during these events.”

Mr Kuridrani said drivers and passengers alike were reminded of their responsibility to adhere to safety guidelines and respect the rules of the road.

“We are leaving no stone unturned in our efforts to maintain order and safety on our roads. Our enforcement officers and road safety education teams will be vigilant in monitoring driver and passenger behaviours, and we will not hesitate to take enforcement action against those who disregard the law.”
