Women Minister Lynda Tabuya says she is “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a young woman in Suva today, allegedly a victim of domestic violence.”

Her statement comes in the wake of a series of tragic losses within our community, allegedly stemming from gender-based violence.

“My heartfelt condolences go to family of the young victim and loved ones as well as other families that have lost loved ones in the similar circumstances.

“I wish to reiterate our stance – gender-based violence, including domestic violence, is a human rights violation and a criminal offense under Fijian law. It is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

“If you or someone you know needs help, please contact the National Domestic Violence Helpline – 1560 or the Child Helpline – 1325.”

Ms Tabuya says the Coalition Government recognizes that incidences of violence are not isolated incidents “but rather manifestations of deep-rooted gender inequalities and patriarchal structures that perpetuate men’s power and control which normalize violence.”

“To combat this national scourge, I firmly believe that we must unite as a nation and stop it before it starts.”
