The University of Fiji has emerged as the leading Fiji-based institution in the internationally recognised Nature Index after recording the country’s highest institutional Share, reflecting its growing contribution to globally recognised research.

The Nature Index assesses research published in 178 selected high-quality journals spanning the natural, health, applied and social sciences. While publication numbers are considered, the institutional Share measures the extent of an institution’s contribution to the research itself.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem described the achievement as a major milestone, saying it highlights the University’s dedication to research excellence despite the challenges of operating in a small island developing state.

Professor Shameem said the University was honoured to receive international recognition, adding that research is central to higher education and plays an important role in advancing knowledge for the benefit of society.

Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Science, Dr Ramendra Prasad, also welcomed the recognition, describing it as a proud moment for both the University and its School of Science and Technology.

He said the Nature Index recognises research published in 178 peer-selected journals across a range of scientific disciplines, making the achievement a significant accomplishment for the University’s Science Department and the School of Science and Technology.

Dr Prasad said the recognition reflects the collective efforts of the University’s researchers and staff, further strengthening its reputation as a research-focused institution with an expanding presence in the international scientific community.

He noted that the publication contributing to the University’s Nature Index ranking resulted from a research collaboration between the University of Fiji’s Science Department and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden.

Dr Prasad also acknowledged the contributions of Associate Professor Ramendra Prasad, Ms Ayesha Reddy and Ms Dhrishna Charan, who authored the publication behind the University’s achievement.

The University said the recognition reinforces its growing influence in scientific research across Fiji, the Pacific and beyond, while reaffirming its commitment to strengthening research capacity, promoting innovation, advancing academic excellence and expanding international partnerships.
