The National Fire Authority is urging business owners and operators to remain vigilant and strengthen their fire prevention practices following a property fire at Kaunitoni Street in Vatuwaqa, on Thursday night.

The National Command Centre received an emergency call through the 910-emergency line at approximately 8:44pm reporting a fire at the property. Fire crews were immediately dispatched to respond to the incident.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a lean-to structure attached to a two-storey concrete building well involved in fire.

The structure, which was being used as a storage area for old cooking equipment and company files, sustained significant damage as a result of the fire.

Firefighters managed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to the adjoining two storey building, which could have resulted in more extensive damage and greater risk to surrounding properties.

The fire resulted in an estimated 60 percent damage to the affected structure, with preliminary property losses estimated at approximately $80,000.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is currently under investigation by NFA Fire Investigators.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane expressed concern over the incident and stressed the importance of businesses taking proactive steps to safeguard their premises, employees, customers and surrounding communities.

Sowane highlighted that businesses have a responsibility to maintain safe working environments by identifying potential fire hazards and taking appropriate measures to minimise risks.

The NFA continues to encourage businesses to conduct regular fire risk assessments, comply with fire safety requirements and work closely with the Authority to create safer workplaces.
