Two police officers who were issued bench warrants for failing to appear in court over an Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs case involving Imran Khan have appeared before the Nasinu Magistrates Court.
During proceedings, the officers provided explanations for their absence, which were accepted by the Resident Magistrate.
The court subsequently cancelled the bench warrants and directed the State to recharge Mr. Khan as soon as possible.
A third bench warrant issued against a civilian staff member remains active until she appears before the court.
Rusiate Tudravu, the Commissioner of Police, has acknowledged the criticism directed at the Fiji Police Force following the initial discharge of the accused.
He said the organisation accepts responsibility for the shortcomings that contributed to the situation.
Commissioner Tudravu said the Police Internal Affairs Unit will continue pursuing disciplinary processes to ensure officers are held accountable for failing to carry out their duties.
He described the officers’ failure to fulfil their legal responsibilities and their lack of respect for court procedures as matters that damage public confidence in the Police Force.
The Commissioner added that the Fiji Police Force continues to address service delivery issues through improved training, awareness programmes and stronger internal accountability systems to respond to concerns regarding officer conduct and public complaints.
