Thousands of residents in Rotuma, Lakeba and Vanua Balavu are set to gain improved access to reliable water services through the REnew Pacific project, which commenced in 2025.
The initiative is expected to benefit about 4,900 people by upgrading climate-resilient water infrastructure across the three remote maritime islands.
It is being implemented through a partnership between the Australian Government and the Government of Fiji, with the Water Authority of Fiji leading delivery on the ground.
As part of the project, existing diesel-powered water pumps are being replaced with solar-hybrid systems to provide a more dependable water supply while lowering fuel expenses and cutting carbon emissions.
Project partner GGGI Pacific, together with the Water Authority of Fiji, has completed site assessments and technical inspections on Vanua Balavu to support the next phase of implementation.
Alongside infrastructure upgrades, the project is engaging community members and local leaders to help ensure the systems remain sustainable over the long term.
Training programmes are also being delivered to strengthen local knowledge and technical capacity.
The project highlights the ongoing collaboration between Australia and Fiji to deliver practical, community-focused climate and infrastructure solutions that improve essential services for rural and maritime communities.
